Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula

System

Polar marine sediments / microbial remediation

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Eleven cultured bacterial isolates from Antarctic sediments were screened for perchlorate tolerance and removal. All grew at 10,000 mg/L in cultures, five tolerated 15,000 mg/L, and isolates reduced perchlorate by about 40–52% in separate assays.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Worth watching for methods development in cold-region pollution remediation. The next tests are enzyme/pathway verification, growth conditions, field performance and risk to native microbial communities.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Growth tolerance is not biodegradation; proposed enzymatic pathways were not directly measured and no ecosystem-scale intervention was attempted.
