## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

The ICES Journal of Marine Science published an October 19 retraction and removal of an earlier study about longline fish assemblages. The editors and author state that use of confidential data exceeded the authorization given by the data owner, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, which requested its removal.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Reproducible ecology includes data governance. This notice documents permission failure, not an independent study proving an ecological model wrong; don't cite removed confidential data as valid published evidence.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Do not infer fabrication, statistical error or biological falsification absent such a finding in the journal's notice.
