Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Kolkata-region sewage-fed aquaculture, India

System

Aquaculture health; microbial disease ecology

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers investigated losses in sewage-fed carp culture, isolated Enterococcus gallinarum and assessed its pathogenicity under controlled challenge conditions. The isolate exhibited resistance to several tested antimicrobials.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Aquaculture ecology intersects water quality, fish health and antimicrobial stewardship; distinguishing observed field events from experimental mechanisms is essential.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Controlled infection can show isolate pathogenicity but cannot by itself attribute every field death, quantify human infection risk, or generalize antimicrobial patterns to all farms.
