Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Sixteen Swiss streams across agricultural, urban and lower-intensity catchments

System

Beaver-dammed streams; floodplain wetlands; taxon monitoring

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Investigators paired beaver-dammed and non-beaver reaches at sixteen streams spanning land-use intensity. Amphibians, dragonflies, aquatic plants and plankton often showed increased richness or abundance in dammed reaches; fish and terrestrial plants sometimes gained richness without abundance. Several terrestrial taxa and aquatic invertebrates showed no detected difference, and intensive land use weakened some responses.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Management read: Before promoting beaver-compatible river restoration, name the target taxa, upstream flood/infrastructure risks, and landowner constraints; monitor water levels, wetland plants and amphibians alongside null-response groups rather than advertising universal recovery.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Observational paired sites are not randomized installations. Some outcomes were null or context sensitive; this evidence does not alone establish flood-mitigation performance or conflict-free land management.
