Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

35 mangrove-holding countries

System

Mangrove forests; remote sensing; national inventory; climate policy

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A comparison of 35 countries holding about 95% of worldwide mangrove area finds widespread capacity to monitor mangrove extent by remote sensing but less complete incorporation into field-based forest inventories. Stronger monitoring capacity was not associated with more ambitious mangrove inclusion in national climate policies.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Maps, field inventories, national commitments, implementation funding and ecological outcomes are different steps. Better information does not by itself guarantee a stronger institutional response.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This comparative governance review does not identify causal reasons for policy ambition or show that field protection is absent; national commitments are not independently measured ecological outcomes.
