Geography

Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany; fir and Douglas-fir specimens

System

Forest pathology, molecular diagnostics and biosecurity

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers identified Biscogniauxia rosacearum in two German conifers while distinguishing it genetically from B. mediterranea. A primer set thought to diagnose the latter amplified B. rosacearum instead, complicating historical records. Both sampled trees carried other diseases, and Koch's postulates have not been met for B. rosacearum in these hosts.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Detection does not equal causation, and an assay's apparent specificity can unravel with better reference material. An accurate diagnostic baseline matters before deciding a fungus is driving an outbreak or merits quarantine controls.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Two host detections, co-occurring pathogens, no proven causal role and no completed phytosanitary risk assessment. The current evidence cannot establish spread velocity, impacts on new conifer hosts or a recommended control regime.
