Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Mizoram state, northeastern India

System

Forest fragmentation, spatial risk screening and planning

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Using classified forest patches from 2005 and 2025 and a weights-of-evidence model, researchers found an increase in mapped patch forest and estimated that 41.06% of Mizoram fell into moderate-to-very-high fragmentation susceptibility classes. Proximity to developed land, farming, roads and streams helped explain the modeled susceptibility; model AUC was 0.831.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Use the susceptibility map to prioritize field validation of remaining large forest cores, edge pressure, road-related access and potential corridors. Track observed conversion and habitat quality in candidate priority areas before committing to prescriptions.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Susceptibility is not an observed prediction of future deforestation or restoration effectiveness. The model assumes future processes resemble 2005–2025 change, and AUC measures discrimination rather than site-specific management outcomes.
