Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Two drained peatland restoration sites, northern Minnesota, USA

System

Acidic peatland hydrology, moss transfer and community recovery

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

At two peatland sites, rewetting and moss transfer shifted vegetation toward wetland species over five years. Similarity to 43 reference wetlands rose from under 5% to just 9–15%; floristic conservatism increased and invasive cover fluctuated.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Management read: separately track water table, moss-layer survival, community composition, non-native plants and carbon-related indicators over repeated years; rising water alone is not restored peat formation.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Two unrandomized treatment sites cannot isolate intervention effects. Vegetation similarity does not directly measure peat accumulation or full hydrologic recovery.
