BirdLife’s new assessment is grim but spatially instructive. Reporting from the Global Flyways Summit in Nairobi says roughly one in nine migratory bird species is threatened and 45% of assessed migratory species are declining.

The flyway framing emphasizes that site-by-site conservation is inadequate for organisms whose annual habitat system crosses continents.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Threat categories and population-trend assessments are distinct measures. A global assessment can mask differences among species, routes and monitoring coverage.
