A separate Landscape Ecology paper examines land-sparing versus land-sharing strategies for urban bird diversity and finds that their effects are context-dependent.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Urban design often treats “one large green area” versus “green distributed through development” as an abstract planning preference. The ecological answer may depend on the city, species community and configuration rather than one universal doctrine.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The study uses citizen-science observations in Nanjing. Some differences were not statistically significant; results vary by season, spatial scale and bird residency status.
