WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Using 894 soil-temperature sensors and connectivity models from one- to 100-metre resolution, researchers found less than 7% of the landscape climatically disconnected under moderate warming. Under stronger warming, more than 30% remained disconnected even at fine resolution, with connectivity collapsing at the highest elevations.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Microrefugia can buy space but are not an unlimited buffer. Fine-resolution climate mapping should be paired with dispersal distance and habitat constraints before assuming topographic heterogeneity will allow species to track warming.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
The analysis models temperature connectivity rather than realized plant movement and assumes simplified dispersal. Average required movement exceeded five kilometres under the strongest scenario, far beyond typical dispersal for many alpine plants.
