WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers compared two restoration approaches across 30 Atlantic Coast saltmarshes, following sites for as long as seven years: adding sediment to increase elevation, and modifying hydrology. Sediment addition produced more consistent gains in vegetation of interest. Hydrologic modification without raising elevation produced much more variable vegetation responses. Bird responses were weaker, although vegetation change appeared capable of producing later gains in abundance and diversity. Restoration effects also varied with tidal amplitude, latitude and marsh elevation.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Instead of treating 30 restoration projects as unrelated case studies, the authors used a coordinated experiment to ask which interventions generalized and where site context changed the result. It also cautions against prematurely declaring success. The authors argue that decadal monitoring is necessary to understand the true outcome of these projects. Seven years can still be early in an ecological trajectory.
