WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Water and sand sampling at four estuarine stations characterized larger debris, microplastics and two plastic additives. BPA was detected in all collected water samples and dibutyl phthalate in 67%. The largest measured chemical signals occurred near urban Propriá but the microplastic maximum occurred elsewhere.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Shoreline litter counts cannot substitute for dissolved-additive or sediment exposure measurements; a useful monitoring plan must specify material, compartment and transport mechanism.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
This limited observational station network cannot assign specific industrial sources, estimate annual loads or establish toxic effects from detections alone.
