Mine reclamation reduced erosion more consistently than runoff

A 58-study synthesis found strong average sediment benefits from conservation measures but important hydrological variation.

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Meta-analysis of 58 mine restoration studies internationally
System
Post-mining revegetation; runoff and erosion management

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An October 30 weighted meta-analysis estimated average runoff reduction of 49.0% and soil erosion reduction of 67.6%. Combined interventions generally outperformed isolated soil amendments; site slope, rainfall and duration modified performance.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A restored landform's sediment control, water routing and biological recovery are separate targets with different evidence bases.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Heterogeneous study methods and sites constrain transferability; reduced erosion does not establish native-species or carbon recovery.
