A stream-flow model found that 'more water' is not one habitat outcome

Hydraulic habitat units in a Korean stream responded differently as modeled environmental flows changed.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A two-dimensional hydraulic study modeled pools, riffles, runs, ruffles and rapids along approximately 2.9 km and compared habitat-diversity metrics across flow scenarios. Different indices produced different favorable discharge values.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Environmental-flow decisions need an explicit biological objective and field validation; optimizing one hydraulic index may not optimize another ecological response.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Modeled hydraulic diversity is a habitat proxy rather than observed fish recruitment or a measured ecological restoration outcome.
