Wildfire effects on algal nutrients depended on stream valley position

Colorado nutrient-addition experiments detected seasonally changing limitation above and below river beads.

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Three streams in the Cameron Peak Fire scar, Colorado, USA
System
Post-fire stream nutrient cycling and geomorphology

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Factorial nitrogen/phosphorus additions above and below low-gradient river segments showed downstream nitrogen response during low flow, but stronger upstream co-limitation during high flow. Macroinvertebrate grazer density also affected the algal chlorophyll response.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Geomorphic position and grazers modify nutrient consequences of wildfire; one downstream station can miss important contrasts.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Three fire-scar streams, local nutrient-diffusing substrates and chlorophyll response; not a direct whole-river restoration measure.
