A biome-wide remote-sensing assessment found Amazon secondary vegetation is dominated by young, small, edge-heavy patches with a mean age/half-life of about seven years; nearly 44% occurred on land without formal registration. The study integrates patch age, core area, connectivity and tenure to distinguish early, isolated and consolidated regeneration.

Restoration planning needs to distinguish young, edge-dominated regrowth from more established and connected vegetation. Area alone is a weak description of recovery.
