WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
WHO validated Bhutan’s elimination of dog-transmitted human rabies as a public-health problem after a dossier review and field mission in August 2026. Bhutan has recorded zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies since June 2023. The programme combines mass dog vaccination, dog-population management, free post-exposure prophylaxis, integrated human–animal surveillance, community participation and cross-border coordination.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
The ecological-intelligence lesson is institutional: disease control at an animal–human interface works as a maintained system of surveillance, veterinary action, human healthcare, community participation and boundary coordination. The validation standard matters as much as the headline milestone.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
WHO validation concerns dog-mediated human rabies as a public-health problem; it does not mean rabies virus is absent from all animals or that reintroduction risk has disappeared. Continued vaccination, surveillance, PEP access and cross-border coordination remain necessary.
