Wild Lands / Ecological Intelligence

Ethiopia's urban vultures reveal a citywide ecology of risk

Field counts around Jimma intersect with electrocution, poisoning and the scavenging services urban wildlife provide.

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Jimma City, southwest Ethiopia
System
Urban scavenger birds; power lines and waste

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A seasonal field survey documented multiple vulture species in and around Jimma, with different abundances across wet and dry periods and human infrastructure among reported threats. The work puts threatened scavengers within a functional urban food web.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

City ecological planning should include hazardous infrastructure and waste pathways as well as park vegetation. Scavengers are part of urban ecosystem function, not merely peripheral wildlife.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Seasonal counts and reported threats do not prove abundance trends, population causes or intervention effectiveness; potential double-counting and survey effort matter.
