WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
USGS and state and federal partners sampled the Colorado River near the Potash boat ramp in June and July 2026 using environmental-DNA autosamplers and detected zebra mussel DNA for the first time in Utah. The detection triggered public outreach, additional sampling and evaluation of control strategies.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
This is what an early-warning monitoring system is supposed to do: create decision time before visible establishment or widespread damage. The management value comes from acting on a sensitive signal while keeping the distinction between detected DNA and a confirmed population explicit.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
An eDNA detection does not establish that live zebra mussels are present, reproducing or established in the river. Managers are still sampling to distinguish transported DNA or low-level presence from an actual population.
