WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Using 2024 peak counts and standardized traits across 14 World Heritage-related wetland units, researchers built trait-based indices of cultural, regulating and supporting ecosystem-service potential. The service profiles diverged among sites, and species richness, Shannon diversity, functional dispersion and site area did not consistently recover the trait-level differences.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Conservation value can be multidimensional even inside a single wetland network. Trait composition can reveal functional differences that area and species counts obscure, which may help managers identify where different sites contribute complementary value.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
These indices estimate service potential from pre-defined trait mappings; they do not measure realized ecosystem-service delivery or visitor value. Annual peak counts, uneven observation effort, a small site sample and correlated traits limit inference.
