WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Researchers recorded 71 bird species across four habitat types. Natural and plantation forests supported higher richness and abundance than open habitats, while community similarity suggested that multiple habitat types contribute complementary value across the mosaic.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
The useful signal is landscape heterogeneity, not a claim that plantations substitute for natural forest. Similar assemblages can identify potential structural connections worth protecting and testing.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
Different survey methods were used in open and forest habitats, which can affect detectability. Bird movement, dispersal and gene flow were not measured, so the study supports structural rather than functional connectivity.
