WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Researchers combined morphology with mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data to document a Lakshadweep octocoral closely allied to Dendronephthya sinaiensis, a species described from the Red Sea. The record expands the molecularly documented biogeographic picture of the group into the Arabian Sea.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
The useful signal is both biogeographic and methodological: molecular reference records can reveal range connections that morphology alone may miss, while the retained 'cf.' designation shows why difficult taxa should not be forced into false certainty.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
Dendronephthya taxonomy is difficult, available molecular markers have limited resolving power and the authors retain a tentative identification. One new record does not establish abundance, trend or a recent range expansion.
