WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Deep shotgun metagenomics of an enriched cyanobacteria-associated consortium reached 99.7% estimated community coverage and recovered 14 high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes across five phyla, including several putative novel lineages and a distinct dominant Nostocaceae lineage. Genomes carried predicted functions for photosynthesis, stress response and nutrient transformations.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Genome-resolved work can turn an apparently simple enrichment culture into a map of interacting functional potential. Extreme-environment consortia may be useful as ecological model systems without assuming that every predicted trait is expressed in the field.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
The consortium was enriched from surface water–sediment slurry collected at a single Talabre site in 2012, so cultivation altered the original community. Novelty is genomic/taxonomic inference, and many functional claims are predicted from sequence rather than demonstrated ecosystem performance in situ.
