WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
A field experiment compared chicory and berseem clover monocultures and intercrops under arbuscular-mycorrhizal inoculation, phosphorus fertilizer rates and combinations. Intercropping generally outperformed monoculture, AMF treatments produced the strongest soil biological activity, and chemical superphosphate reduced biological activity indicators. The highest reported land-equivalent ratio was 1.107 in a 2:1 berseem-clover:chicory treatment receiving mycorrhiza plus 75 kg ha−1 phosphorus.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
The result argues for evaluating fertilizer decisions against biological function and crop complementarity rather than assuming the highest nutrient rate is the best treatment. The productive unit here is the crop–fungus–soil system, not phosphorus alone.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
This is one field experiment in one forage system, and responses depend on soil fertility, inoculum, crop varieties and local climate. Structural-equation paths are model-based evidence, not proof of all causal mechanisms, and the tested phosphorus rates should not be exported as universal recommendations.
