Wild Lands / Ecological Intelligence

An 18-year stream experiment makes maintenance central to restoration

Large wood additions changed channel shape, but managers had to replenish and adapt to connect floodplains.

Evidence
Peer-reviewed long-term controlled experiment
Geography
Asotin Creek, Washington, USA
System
Headwater streams / floodplain geomorphology

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across three tributaries, crews installed 654 large-wood structures, then added maintenance wood and adaptive beaver analogues. Channel bar and pool areas and side channels expanded with flood, fire and later treatments.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Installation counts are not outcomes. Riverscape interventions require follow-up, sediment and wood recruitment, and allowance for major disturbance events.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This measures geomorphic and connectivity change, not a demonstrated proportional fish-population gain; it reflects a particular watershed.
