Drought makes biodiversity's productivity effects diverge between grassland and forest

A 75-experiment synthesis reports stronger diversity protection under drought in more arid grasslands.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across 75 biodiversity experiments, diversity most strongly enhanced grassland productivity during extreme drought in more arid locations. Forest responses were limited under similar events, with no comparable aridity interaction for heat or detectable soil-nutrient effect.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A single biodiversity-resilience multiplier is unsuitable across biomes; rainfall regime and stress type matter.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Productivity is only one ecosystem service and experiments differ; results do not guarantee persistence through repeated future extremes.
