Surface-deployed coral seeding devices may reduce one restoration bottleneck

An Australian design trial tests whether seeding can move beyond costly diver-by-diver placement.

Evidence
Peer-reviewed restoration engineering trial
Geography
Great Barrier Reef, Australia
System
Coral reef / juvenile recruitment

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Six deployments of roughly 6,400 ceramic devices achieved 62–89% retention and 24–60% live-coral yield on devices recovered after 12–14 months. Surface placement performed similarly to diver placement.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The device and deployment platform may be scaled independently of biological restoration success; watch future recruitment and reef community results.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These are early device and coral survival measures, not self-sustaining reef recovery. Success depends on species and benthic terrain; first published 2025.
