Rock weathering can offset part of thaw-driven river carbon loss

A Qinghai–Tibet Plateau analysis finds geological uptake can counter a significant share of river CO2 outgassing.

Evidence
Peer-reviewed geochemical field analysis and model
Geography
Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, China
System
Permafrost watersheds / river geochemistry

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

River carbon isotopes, solutes, CO2 measurements and modelling suggest weathering-related CO2 drawdown averaging roughly 35% of river emissions, varying from around 15% with continuous permafrost to over 100% with fragmented cover.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

River carbon balances need the weathering counterflux alongside biological respiration; a single emission number obscures the geochemical process.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Gradient-based, model-assisted estimates from plateau geology; not evidence that all thawing basins switch to net sinks.
