WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Across 50 spatial grids spanning a broad cultivated-land fraction, the study identified nonlinear breakpoints between cropland expansion and drought-related indicators. At high cultivated fractions, modeled drought stress and drought–heat co-occurrence increased sharply rather than changing in a simple linear way.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Land conversion can create threshold behavior that is invisible to average trend lines. That is relevant to working-land planning because landscape composition may alter climate vulnerability before a conventional land-use cap is reached.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
This is a space-for-time observational analysis rather than a controlled longitudinal conversion experiment. Reported thresholds are model-dependent and should not be treated as universal regulatory breakpoints.
