Cyanobacterial crop biostimulants have promising mechanisms and uneven proof

A research review distinguishes biochemical potential from tested field performance and safety.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A narrative review synthesizes biological nitrogen fixation, nutrient mobilization, metabolites, phytohormones and possible stress responses from cyanobacteria used in crop systems. It concludes that direct functional evidence connecting specific compounds or pathways to crop responses remains limited and that strain, formulation, host plant and growing conditions materially affect results.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For a land manager, the label 'microbial solution' is a hypothesis until treatment outcomes, realistic application costs and biosafety are measured under field conditions.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a review, not a new controlled field efficacy trial. The authors identify cyanotoxin risk at strain level and the need for toxicological screening; do not infer products are uniformly safe.
