Four Korean marine heatwaves intensified under a warmer-climate model

Counterfactual ocean–atmosphere experiments distinguished added background warming from event-scale variability.

Marine heatwaves; coupled ocean–atmosphere modeling

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A coupled weather–ocean modeling study compared factual and counterfactual thermodynamic conditions for four marine heatwave episodes. Simulated warming increased sea-surface temperature and, across modeled events, heatwave duration, area or intensity.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For marine habitat planning, ecological extremes are driven both by event weather and a changing baseline; decision-support should preserve the distinction.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

A four-event model perturbation experiment, not measured biological damage or attribution of every historical heatwave. Early peer-reviewed manuscript may receive formatted publication updates.
