Roads may be one of the most underestimated ecological multipliers in landscape analysis. The Siberian study’s strongest result is the enormous mismatch between direct road footprint and surrounding fragmentation/biomass effects. Linear infrastructure deserves to be treated as a process that reorganizes access and edges, not only a land-cover class.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The magnitude of fragmentation is specific to the Siberian landscapes and metrics studied. The broader road-multiplier idea is an interpretation to test elsewhere.
