WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Michigan agencies confirmed an established spotted-lanternfly population in Berrien County on 10 September. The county is a major grape-producing area; surveillance has not yet found the insect in a vineyard there. By the announcement, populations had been confirmed in eight Michigan counties and more than 100 sites were being monitored.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Early invasion management is partly a problem of where to intensify surveillance before economic damage appears. A confirmed population near vulnerable crops changes the value of detection, reporting and containment even before vineyard impacts are observed.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
A confirmed county population does not establish crop damage at current densities, and the insect's future spread and economic effect in Michigan remain uncertain. The source is an agency response update rather than a controlled ecological study.
