Bonga’s charcoal supply chain translated into measurable forest loss and emissions

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Kafa Biosphere Reserve / Bonga, southwestern Ethiopia
System
Tropical forest / forest-energy supply chain

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 2020 study combining household surveys, interviews and daily charcoal-supply monitoring estimated that Bonga Town consumed roughly 5,449 tonnes of charcoal per year, requiring about 27,244 tonnes of dry wood and affecting an estimated 895 hectares; two of the three most preferred tree species were endemic.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Energy demand can be translated into landscape exposure when supply-chain quantities, species preferences and conversion assumptions are made explicit, creating a stronger basis for targeted forest and livelihood interventions.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The estimates come from one town and depend on wood-to-charcoal, tree and area conversion assumptions. They should not be extrapolated to the whole biosphere reserve or nationally without additional supply-chain data.
