WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Zou and colleagues examined how contrasting fungal ecological strategies relate to soil-carbon dynamics in agroecosystems. They report that functional strategies and microbial traits improve the mechanistic interpretation of fertility and carbon outcomes compared with undifferentiated community descriptors.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
A soil biodiversity result should specify which organisms and ecological functions are changing. Management claims about microbial inputs need outcomes such as decomposition, respiration and retained carbon, not taxonomy alone.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
The abstract does not establish a universally transferable treatment prescription or field-scale carbon gain from inoculation.
