Climate-envelope maps for edible blue milkcap point to shrinking mycoforestry options

A Mexico–southern US suitability model suggests the cultivation landscape may contract sharply this century.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A MaxEnt model using curated GBIF observations projected present and future climate suitability of Lactarius indigo. Current suitable climate covered about 2.63 million km²; late-century modeled area dropped across low-, medium- and high-emission scenarios.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Edible ectomycorrhizal fungi may become important to diversified forest economies, but today’s climate envelope is not a viable farm or restoration design.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Projection excludes host-tree availability, soil properties, genotypes, dispersal and field cultivation success. Future map area is not predicted harvest or occupancy.
