WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Not all secondary forest is equivalent restoration capital. A biome-wide remote-sensing assessment found Amazon secondary vegetation is dominated by young, small, edge-heavy patches with a mean age/half-life of about seven years; nearly 44% occurred on land without formal registration. The study integrates patch age, core area, connectivity and tenure to distinguish early, isolated and consolidated regeneration.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Restoration planning needs to distinguish young, edge-dominated regrowth from more established and connected vegetation. Area alone is a weak description of recovery.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Satellite classifications and estimated regeneration ages are proxies for ecological condition. Connectivity on a map does not by itself establish functional movement or recovery.
