WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A September 29 EcoEvoRxiv preprint proposes defining evolutionary rescue relative to a no-evolution counterfactual and estimating how evolutionary change shifts the distribution of extinction times through time. The framework is meant to replace a simple rescued/not-rescued label with a probabilistic description of persistence benefit.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

If the framework matures, it could make evolutionary-rescue claims more comparable across models and experiments by separating the contribution of evolution from the background chance of persistence. That is potentially useful for range-shift and rapid-change questions where population outcomes are inherently probabilistic.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is version 1 of a preprint and has not been peer reviewed. It is a conceptual and modeling perspective rather than an empirical conservation intervention, and its practical utility still needs testing across real populations and management contexts.

A new preprint perspective proposes estimating how evolution changes extinction-time distributions rather than asking only whether a population ultimately persists.
