WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A review of green sawfish research found 123 peer-reviewed studies since 2005, with 65 involving Australian animals and a strong concentration in Western Australia. Major gaps remain in population size and trends, adult spatial ecology, bycatch mitigation, trophic ecology and many parts of the historical range.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Conservation knowledge can be geographically biased toward places where monitoring capacity and remnant populations are strongest. That creates a risk of designing range-wide strategy from the ecology of a few better-studied refuges.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a literature review, so it diagnoses evidence coverage rather than new population trends. Absence of studies is not evidence of absence, and illegal fishing and reporting gaps make status especially uncertain in parts of the range.

A new review identifies 123 studies since 2005 but finds research heavily concentrated in northern Australia while major range-wide knowledge gaps persist.
