The microbial constraint hidden inside thawing permafrost

Evidence
Peer-reviewed incubation experiment
Geography
Arctic/boreal permafrost soils
System
Permafrost / carbon and nitrogen cycling

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Four permafrost types incubated for 389 days produced 20–60% more CO2 after addition of a multifunctional microbial community. Native active-layer inocula worked inconsistently. In one anoxic palsa-soil experiment, inoculation increased methane nearly fivefold and the six-month CO2-equivalent by 35%.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Climate-feedback models need microbial colonization, community assembly and oxygen regime, not just temperature and carbon stocks. This is evidence about mechanisms, not an inoculation prescription.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These were laboratory incubations with specified source soils, not field fluxes. The anoxic methane result cannot be extrapolated across all permafrost.

What moves into newly thawed soil may change greenhouse-gas emissions as much as what was frozen there.
