In Białowieża, a localized wind gap stopped looking different to birds after 35–45 years

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Białowieża Primeval Forest, Poland
System
Primeval lowland temperate forest

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers revisited 50 wind-created canopy gaps and 50 control points first surveyed in 1988, when gaps were 0–10 years old. The gaps initially supported distinct bird assemblages and gap size strongly structured those differences. By 2023, 35–45 years after gap formation, canopy cover had recovered, bird assemblages no longer differed detectably between treatments and initial gap size no longer had a detectable effect, although some tree-composition and canopy-height differences persisted.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

This is a useful reference case for ecological patience. In a forest with intact natural processes, a localized disturbance can leave structural memory while the focal animal community converges without active repair. The management implication is not ‘do nothing everywhere’; it is to ask whether intervention is actually needed for the process and scale of disturbance in front of you.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is one exceptionally intact, productive temperate forest and the disturbances were localized wind gaps with a median area of about 0.8 ha. Recovery was demonstrated for canopy cover and one taxonomic group, not every component of ecosystem function, and the result should not be generalized to heavily fragmented, degraded, plantation or landscape-scale disturbance contexts.

The same 50 wind-created canopy gaps and 50 controls were surveyed in 1988 and 2023; bird assemblages and canopy cover converged even though some forest-structure differences persisted.

Portugal — Local bird richness rose as rural land use retreated, but open-land specialists did not share the gains

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Côa River basin, Portugal
System
Mediterranean upland mosaics

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Resurveys of 213 four-square-kilometre cells found mean local richness rising from about 21 to 27 species between the early 2000s and 2023–2024. Forest-associated and generalist birds drove most gains while farmland specialists showed little net improvement or slight declines.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Land abandonment and passive woody recovery can produce genuine local biodiversity gains while simultaneously shifting community composition away from species tied to long-maintained open agro-pastoral habitats.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Historical transect locations were not known precisely and observer teams differed between periods. Regional richness stayed similar; the major change was redistribution and local occupancy, not a large gain in the total regional species pool.

A 20-year resurvey found a 28% rise in local bird richness driven mainly by forest species and generalists.
