For stump-dwelling beetles, where the clearcut sits mattered more than whether the spruce stand was uniform

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Beetles were sampled from 150 spruce stumps across five paired locations comparing fast-growing spruce monocultures on former arable land with structurally varied stands. Researchers found 1,378 beetles representing 67 species. Species richness differed by site location but not significantly by stand type; variation partitioning showed location explained about three times more species-composition variation than stand type.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A stand label is a weak substitute for landscape context. For decisions such as stump harvesting, the surrounding species pool and configuration may matter enough that managers need landscape-scale screening rather than assuming monoculture stumps are low conservation value.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Only five site pairs were studied, the analysis sampled one substrate type with bark sieving, and the study did not directly model which surrounding landscape features caused the site effect. Most recorded species were common rather than currently red-listed.

Across five Swedish site pairs, landscape location explained about three times more community variation than stand type, and spruce monocultures were not significantly poorer in stump-associated species richness.
