Belowground recovery tracked soil moisture more consistently than restoration label in one karst landscape

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

The study compared belowground biological indicators across six vegetation-restoration systems and found soil moisture among the most consistent correlates of more developed microbial and nematode food-web structure. The authors recommend pairing vegetation measures with belowground and habitat-condition indicators.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Restoration labels can obscure whether the soil habitat required for a functioning food web has actually returned. Moisture retention and physical soil condition may be more decision-relevant monitoring variables than vegetation establishment alone.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The design was observational and conducted at a single site, so soil moisture is an association rather than a demonstrated causal treatment. Proposed food-web indicators are useful local references, not universal thresholds.

Across six vegetation-restoration systems, soil food-web maturity and microbial–nematode structure were more consistently associated with moisture and physical soil conditions than with the nominal restoration category alone.
