stratification

Summer stratification shifted Gulf of Aqaba carbon toward near-surface microbial recycling

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea
System
Oligotrophic tropical marine water column and microbial food web

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across five monthly cruises from May to September 2023, particulate primary production declined as summer stratification strengthened while the fraction of recently fixed carbon released as dissolved material increased. Bacterial respiration remained substantial, consistent with more carbon being recycled in the upper water column rather than transferred efficiently to depth.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Warming and stratification can change carbon routing without requiring a dramatic change in the headline presence of primary producers. The ecological question is not only how much carbon is fixed, but where it moves next through the food web and water column.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This was one station over one seasonal cycle and does not establish a long-term trend. Size-partition and filtration methods can affect estimates of particulate versus dissolved production, and extrapolation to future warming or other oligotrophic seas requires replication.
