Planting trees in old savanna changed which birds remained, not always how many

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Western Maharashtra, India
System
Tropical savanna / afforestation / birds

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Birds were counted at 15 paired old-growth savanna and exotic tree plantation sites spanning 459–1007 millimeters of annual rainfall. Averaged across sites, afforestation did not significantly alter total richness or abundance. But the composition shifted: savanna specialists declined, woodland specialists increased, and richness responses differed at the wetter, drier and intermediate ends of the rainfall range.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Counting more trees or even retaining an aggregate species total is not equivalent to conserving the original open-habitat community. Management should identify which ecosystem and species groups its planting goal is intended to serve.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The paired-site comparison is observational and confined to one Indian region and tree-plantation context. It does not imply all native-tree restoration or all agroforestry has the same effect.

Across a Maharashtra rainfall gradient, plantations shifted specialist communities even when total richness did not change overall.

Tree planting stabilized dunes—and helped erase habitat for a rare dune shrub

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Praia de Trece, northwest Spain
System
Atlantic coastal dune / pine plantation edge

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 70-year orthophoto series showed afforested area expanding as open dune habitat fell from about 104.6 ha in 1956 to 40.3 ha in 2023, a 61.5% contraction. Field surveys found Corema album occurrence dropped sharply from open dune into afforested habitat. Plants at the plantation edge were larger, but juveniles made up less than 25% of individuals overall and were absent from edge plots; pine regeneration was abundant in the transition zone.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Afforestation can look like stabilization or restoration while removing the open-system conditions a specialist requires. The counter-signal is not that trees are bad; it is that the desired ecological state cannot be inferred from woody cover alone.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is one long-term site and population, so the historical correlation cannot isolate maritime pine from every other change affecting dunes. Larger adult shrubs at the plantation edge do not establish demographic success, and the role of native versus planted pine and local dune-management history matters.

Seventy years of aerial imagery in northwest Spain show planted maritime pine expansion alongside roughly 61.5% contraction of open dune habitat used by Corema album, with no juveniles found at the plantation edge.

Planting forests can rebuild soil life and carbon—but the trajectory depends on what came before

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Global; six continents
System
Afforested and reforested soils across former agricultural, degraded and other non-forest lands

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A Nature Ecology & Evolution synthesis compared 1,158 paired afforestation or reforestation sites with reference conditions across six continents. Afforestation was associated with greater soil microbial biomass and topsoil carbon across stand development, while reforestation showed substantial early recovery of soil carbon and microbial biomass toward original-forest conditions during roughly the first three decades. The magnitude and persistence of gains varied with prior land condition, stand age and restoration pathway.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The useful signal is that forest recovery is not just a canopy process: belowground biological condition can improve alongside carbon storage. But the starting state and restoration pathway matter, so the same planting effort can produce different soil trajectories. For project design, degraded-land recovery and long-term monitoring of soil function deserve explicit treatment rather than assuming tree cover is a sufficient proxy.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This global synthesis combines heterogeneous chronosequences and paired-site studies rather than one standardized experiment. Older reforestation stands did not show a uniformly continuing increase in every soil metric, and the result should not be converted into a universal prescription to plant trees in naturally open ecosystems where afforestation can harm native biodiversity, fire regimes or water balance.

A global synthesis of 1,158 paired sites finds afforestation and reforestation generally increase soil microbial biomass and topsoil carbon, with especially strong gains on degraded land and different time courses after forest recovery.
