A handheld laser scanner saw woodland fuels a low-cost drone often missed
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
In 12 cork- and holm-oak plots, handheld laser scanning estimated canopy fuel load with roughly 4% relative error, whereas RGB-drone photogrammetry was less reliable for undercanopy variables such as bulk fuel density (up to about 41% relative error).
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
When choosing an inventory method, first identify which canopy or understory metric guides the planned decision. Use ground and handheld validation when a photogrammetric surface model cannot see the variable; choose equipment for measured fitness, not convenience alone.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
Only 12 plots in specific open Mediterranean woodlands were tested, and the study did not independently validate fire-behavior predictions or any fuel treatment.
