kelp aquaculture cultivation systems

A 'more efficient' kelp farming technique produced less kelp per rope

Evidence
Peer-reviewed aquaculture sea-trial experiment
Geography
Central Norway
System
Kelp aquaculture cultivation systems

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Conventional seeded rope yielded 3.8 kg kelp per cultivation meter versus 1.8–2.9 kg for different splice intervals. But splice methods improved harvested biomass per meter of seeded twine by 36–248%; the overall absolute-yield comparison did not reach p<0.05.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Efficiency without specifying the unit can mislead both managers and investors. Compare materials, labor and reliable absolute production before declaring a lower-footprint method ecologically or commercially superior.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Small replicate counts (n=3–4), one site and a season; seeded twine material and starting coverage varied. Commercial lifecycle impacts and full cost-effectiveness were not established.
