Bat immune profiles changed with season, but not all cell types did

Evidence
Peer-reviewed
Geography
Mexican free-tailed bats, United States
System
Wildlife immune cells; migratory bats; field methods

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers validated four antibody markers and adapted flow cytometry to small Mexican free-tailed bat blood samples. Preliminary cell profiling showed some seasonality in adaptive immune cell populations and B cells across migration and reproductive phases, while granulocyte groups, macrophages and T cells did not show detected seasonal differences.

WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Sampling timing and the particular cellular endpoint change what a wildlife health comparison can support. A single conventional leukocyte count is not the whole immune process.

CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is preliminary methodological and observational work, not demonstrated seasonal changes in zoonotic transmission or proof of analogous responses across all bats.

A field-ready cell assay separates seasonal B-cell changes from nondetected shifts in other immune groups.
