Great Lakes wetland plants yielded a more sensitive local disturbance index
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS
Researchers used 41,314 vegetation quadrats from 563 coastal wetlands across twelve years to estimate lake-specific probabilities for plant occurrences under disturbance. The resulting plant-based Index of Biotic Condition tracked water-quality and surrounding land-use gradients at independent test sites and often outperformed traditional floristic-quality measures within each lake.
WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ
Calibration to observed plant responses can make vegetation monitoring more informative than a single expert-assigned conservatism score.
CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY
Lake-specific models and incomplete species weights require recalibration elsewhere. Predicting gradients in observed disturbance does not establish that the index detects every recovery trajectory.
